HISTORICAL MOMENTS SAVOURED
By Jackie Gold - Banff Crag & Canyon staff
Celebrating its I 00th birthday in 2005, Alberta will mark the occasion throughout the year, in a series of events, including a 13-day festival celebrating Albertan artists, as well as Calgary Winterfest 2005 and the Alberta Sport & Recreation Leadership Summit hosted by Banff.
While Albertans celebrate a major milestone in provincial history, citizens of Banff will have their own unique way of getting involved. Beginning Feb. 8, The Banff Crag & Canyon will begin a weekly historical page taking an indepth look at Banff 's history over the past century. Banff 's local paper, which began in 1900, has been a source of pride for the town ever since.
While the paper was not around to record events such as the discovery of Sulphur Mountain's hot spring in 1883 by railway workers William McCardell, Thomas McCardell and Frank McCabe, or the construction of the Banff Springs Hotel five years later, it was there for other important events in the town's history such as the closing of the Bankhead mine in 1922, which at the time was viewed as a severe loss of income for the town.
Events such as these will be looked at as the year progresses, offering a glimpse of the past, as well as examining the development of Banff from a small railway town, to an important and influential town in Alberta .
The Crag & Canyon will be accepting submissions from anyone interested in sharing a story about Banff or the surrounding area.
Articles on people, buildings or events that happened in Banff 's past would all be given consideration for the newspaper's centennial project.
